Mexican DJ Duo Los Wookies – ahem, sorry let me translate that for you with my vast Spanish knowledge: “The Wookies” – threw down a casual set full of French house inspired and tech house tracks that had this retail store movin’ and groovin’ like some kind of low key underground Daft Punk would have:
More Than Silly Clickbait
Much like Daft Punk, the masks of the duo, formed by André Fernández (André VII) and Hugo Díaz Barreiro (Calacas), were front and center and are the first thing you’ll notice. The masks themselves were already bringing some pretty silly vibes and may look gimmicky at first glance – pretty hilarious and amazing masks, tbh. But actually, the set was fire.
What’s even more hilarious to me is that it’s in Mexico. If you’ve ever been to Mexico, then you know they’re no strangers to good house vibes, or a good sense of humor. But the two rarely combine, because their house music scenes have never been very silly. From Mexico City to Tulum to Cancun to to Tijuana, Mexico has a lot of House Music scenes that have really carved out identities for themselves, but you rarely ever seen one quite this funny and lighthearted. These guys thus are standing out with this set and their whole shtick as The Wookies with their homage to Starwars masks and their 90s-esque motorcycle jackets and whole fun vibe while simultaneously dropping hot fire tracks one after another. Kudos to them for not taking things too seriously, enjoying it themselves, and planting their flag in a viral way.
The Set
That said, the set itself is worth listening to without the theatrics. The set isn’t perfect, and blends more than a couple subgenres of house, from french house, to tech house, to electro house, and even some random Mexican techno rap? Lol, a solid variety and authenticity and some risks taken that make us like it even more and shows some of their range of tastes even if every track wasn’t for us. No sync button heroes here, they’re mixing live and dialing it in by hand the way we like it, vibing and feeling it just like the squad behind them (what really counts) as the crowd grows and gets into the vibe, too, in a less than expected settings – a retail store.
Overall it’s a really fun and up-beat set, great for daytime listening, and we hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we did.
They’ve been around the block too, forming all the way back around 2006–2007 in Mexico City after meeting at the Sicario music store, they rose to fame with viral internet releases like Discotecno, and have played huge venues like Glastonbury, Vive Latino, and Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC). So it’s no surprise really that they know how to thrown down a solid set. There are some seasoned veterans under those masks.
The Un-Masking
Unlike Daft Punk, these guys ditched the masks mid-set. Appropriately, they did it during a “It’s Getting Hot In Herre” remix. It must have been hot a f under those masks, lol. Just like with a magic trick, it’s somehow both satisfying and disappointing to see behind the curtain. Nevertheless I don’t blame them for ditching the masks at some point given how big and hairy they are, and it is nice to see the faces behind the masks.
